In 1843, Kierkegaard published Either/Or, under the pseudonym Victor Eremita, who is credited as the editor. Years later, Kierkegaard would claim this work, not only as his own creation but as the beginning of what he would later describe as his «work as an author.» Central to this activity is the doctrine of the stages, which is foreshadowed in Either/Or, where the aesthetic and the ethical are juxtaposed, both in relation to a religiosity that is repeatedly referenced and which openly concludes the text. However, Either/Or opens with a preface that warns us of a «deception» that fully shapes the work. Through this deception, the reader is kept in the dark about a «secret» that we must recognize as the fundamental subject of the work. This secret is none other than the religious, though in a sense distinct from how it is expressed in the text itself. This leads to a reformulation of the relationship between the aesthetic, the ethical, and the religious, which must be uncovered through the literary play carried out in this first work of Kierkegaard’s production.
