SALAMANCA SCHOOL: RESTITUTION AND SLAVERY DOCTRINES
The doctrines of Restitution and Slavery are among the most important and lasting of the second scholastic, in the area of Practical Philosophy. They are an exemplary sample of the elaboration of arguments that marked the political theories of the Baroque period. At the intersection between Ethics and Law, these arguments resulted in new conceptualizations in matters such as Law, State, Justice and Obligation, different from those previously developed by the so-called Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition.
Within the framework of the studies related to the School of Salamanca, and with emphasis on the so-called “Ibero-American Scholasticism”, we intend to gather studies and articles that researchers interested in the theories developed in the matter of restitution and black slavery want send us. We offer a non-exhaustive list of possible topics:
1) the history and contextualization of these doctrines within the framework of the School of Salamanca,
2) the moral, social and economic evaluation of the sale of slaves,
3) the different theological, legal and economic arguments that were given in order to endorse or criticize slavery,
4) discussions between authors or between different schools, about the endorsement or criticism of slavery as a legitimate institution in theological and moral terms.
